layered approach to non-duality teachings

what would you answer if someone asked you, "what are you?"
are you a body? you can feel it, touch it, move it. but is that you? are you a mind? you can hear that too, you can hear your own thoughts, watch them, pull them apart. you can feel happy, you can feel sad, you can feel that something in between them both
said so, we've already found two parts of you, and they are nothing alike. are they one or are they two? and moreover, if you sit a little longer, innit you also looking at them?
people have tried to map this for a long time, and they do not agree on what's what. one old indian map splits a person into three, the solid physical part, the moving mental part, and a still deep part under both. some others cut it into two, assume is one, or none at all. my intuition tells me that they are all talking about the same thing, but we can only use words to explain an experience, not the experience itself, and language/symbols can never get close to what that is
the approach
here is the rule i hold for the rest of this. i will not try to tell you what the world is, i will only talk about experience, because experience is the only thing i can speak of truly
look at what you actually have. you never meet the world directly, you meet your seeing of it, your hearing of it, your thinking about it. the rock out there, the atom, the other mind, all of it reaches you only as something that first shows up in experience. and a lot of what you think you know you never met at all, you were told. the far side of the moon, what happened before you were born, the inside of your own body, you took someone's word for it and built on top. you run on borrowed assumptions all day and call it knowing. the moment i claim to describe the world as it is, i have stepped past the only evidence i will ever hold and started guessing. "the world is matter" is a guess, "the world is mind" is a guess, but "something is appearing right now" is not a guess, it is the one thing that cannot be doubted while it is happening
so i keep the smaller, surer claim and drop the bigger one. not what is, but what appears. this is not a retreat, it is the firmer ground, every grand statement about reality is built on experience anyway, so i go straight to the foundation and stay there
when i talk about that, i am not talking about what it is in itself, i am pointing at how it shows up for you
first layer: mind
start with language, because that is where the splitting happens first
whenever you call something beautiful, you have not described one thing, you have cut the world in two. beautiful only means anything against ugly. the word does not point at an object, it points at a difference. good needs bad to mean good, light needs dark, near needs far. none of these live alone, and none of them are fully separate either, they are two ends of one spectrum that you decided to name at two points. not one, not two, and this is the whole of what the word non-dual means, two you can tell apart but can never pull apart, neither one ever there without the other
and here is where it hurts. the moment you name the split, you take a side. "i want the beautiful, i do not want the ugly". the preference is born inside the word. in spirituality these two sides have names, desire and aversion, the pull toward one half of the cut and the push away from the other, and they are the engine of suffering. then the beautiful does not arrive, or the ugly does, and you suffer. the suffering did not come from the world, it came from the cut you made and then forgot you made: "ignore-nce"
the teaching of this layer: the split is yours, made in language, not found in things
second layer: physical
nothing stands on its own. to be here at all is already to be tied to everything else
take a chair, the most ordinary thing in the room. try to say what it is without smuggling a human in somewhere, you can't. its height is just the height of human knees, its seat the width of a human behind, its back the angle of a human spine that got tired. take people out of the picture and you don't have a chair waiting for someone, you have some wood in a shape that suddenly means nothing. the chair was never a thing we happen to use, it is us, it is human sitting gone solid. and once you catch it in the chair, you start catching it everywhere
the bee grew the flower and the flower grew the bee, pull one out and the other is a key with no lock. the eye is built around light it is not, and around the body it serves, take either side away and it is just wet tissue. even the rock, the one thing that looks like it needs nobody, just sitting there on its own, is splitting the wind, bending the stream, pulling on every mass and getting pulled back, holding a piece of space nothing else can have. strip the relationships off any of these and nothing is left underneath, the relationships are the thing
and it runs all the way out. no rocks, no ground, no ground, no world, no world, no people, and no people, nobody left to call a rock a rock. you can't pull one thread without the whole cloth coming with it. alan watts called this mutual arising, you and everything you think is not-you came up together in the same motion, like the two poles of a magnet, no front without a back, no self without an other. it isn't that things are connected, connected still means two things touching, it is that there was only ever one thing happening, and the seams are something we drew. the same shape as the first layer, the rock and the world are two, and neither is ever there without the other, not one, not two
and here is where it gets sharp, and hard to argue with. you call yourself smart and the world around you dumb, the clever little human dropped into a dull universe. but you just tore down the fence that lets you say that. you are not a thing sitting inside the world, you are something the world is doing, the way a wave is just the ocean waving, the way an apple is the tree appling. so if there is intelligence here, in you, it cannot be locked inside your skin, because the skin is one of those seams we drew. it is the whole field going intelligent at the spot you happen to call you. a universe that turns smart at any point was never a dumb one, no more than an apple tree is a non-apple thing that somehow leaks apples. so if you are smart, the world is smart, in the very same breath, you cannot hand the credit to one end of a thing that has no real ends
the teaching of this layer: nothing has its own being underneath, there are only knots tied into everything else, and pull on any one of them and the whole net moves
third layer: spirit
so let's say we stop judging good and bad. we get it now, everything has its role, and if one rock suddenly stopped existing the whole universe would fall over with it. so here we are, finally seeing the world as it is. but wait a minute. who is seeing it?
think about it for a second. you put your hand on fire and it burns, and you can feel it, right? a thought shows up and you can hear it, you can watch it, you can pull it apart. anger comes, or sadness, and you can feel it rise in you, you can watch it swell and watch it pass. now notice the one thing all of these have in common, in every single one you can turn and look at the thing. so here is the rule, and don't take my word for it, check it on yourself, anything you can turn and look at is not the one doing the looking, am i right? if you can look at the hand, you are not the hand. if you can watch the thought, you are not the thought. and if you can watch the anger, you are not the anger either, even though it feels the most like you, you are only the one it is rising in
so then, who are you? you are the one all of it is showing up to. okay, so turn around and look at that one. go on, actually try to find the looker. and you can't. it never once shows up as a thing you can look at, because the second it did it would just be one more thing getting looked at, not the looking. it is the same trick as the eye back in the second layer, the eye that sees everything is the one thing it can never see
but here is what you cannot wriggle out of. the looking is happening. you can't deny that while it is going on. so you are forced, not by choice, to grant that there is something here, a seer, even though you will never catch it in the act of being a thing. you didn't assume it, you got cornered into it, the looking is undeniable and no looker can be found, so there has to be one that is never an object
so now we have it, an observer, you, and the observed, everything else. but watch what happens when you try to let that observer stand on its own, when you ask it to be anything more than the bare other-end of what it sees. it can't. an observer with nothing to observe is not a quiet observer waiting around, it is nothing at all, the word just empties out. the thing you were forced to grant dissolves the second you ask it to be a thing. so it is real, but only as the looking, and it is empty the moment you try to make it a looker. real as the doing, gone as the someone
the teaching of this layer: you are the seer, but funny enough, not a thing sitting behind your eyes, you are the seeing itself, and seeing is something that happens, not something that sits there. and since the seer is nothing without the seen, you were never one side of the cut, you are the whole thing happening, not one, not two
the now
so what actually changes once you see this? not the world. the world is sitting exactly where it was. what changes is that the line you were standing on this whole time, you in here and everything out there, stops carrying any weight, because you just watched it come apart in your hands. you were never the seer hiding behind your face, you are the whole thing happening, and the whole thing only ever happens in one place
think about where the seen actually lives. the chair you are remembering, the plan you are running, even your own body as you picture it, all of it is a little behind you or a little ahead, a memory or a guess. but the seeing, the bare happening of it, is never behind and never ahead. it has never once happened at any time except now. it can't, a happening can only happen while it is happening. so the seeing and this moment are not two things side by side, they are one event
and that is the thing everyone keeps pointing at and nobody can hand you. the now. not a now you have to reach or earn or sit very still to deserve, the one that is already here, the only place anything has ever happened. you do not arrive at it, you notice you never left
and nothing changed. the chair is still a chair, the rock is still a rock, you still want coffee and not mud. you did not escape the world, you just stopped leaning out of the only moment it was ever in. that was the whole thing all along, not some other place to get to, just this, happening, now, and it needs no idea of itself to keep on happening
